Through this training, 23 students received instruction on the use of Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) in managing miscarriage cases. The event, which took place on August 12\u201313, 2026, combined online and in-person sessions to strengthen participants\u2019 theoretical understanding and practical skills. <\/p>\n
AVM is a medical procedure used to remove the products of conception from the uterus using a manual vacuum device as part of miscarriage care. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends this method as a safe and effective approach to managing miscarriages. <\/p>\n
One of the participants, Tiara, said she gained a lot of new knowledge during the training. According to her, the most interesting topics were the signs of miscarriage and the proper techniques for inserting and removing an AVM. <\/p>\n
“What\u2019s interesting about this training is how to remove the device and how to recognize signs of a miscarriage. We\u2019ll be able to put this knowledge into practice when we meet pregnant women in the field. In his view, medical competence must be balanced with the ability to communicate empathetically so that patients will respond positively to the care they receive. <\/p>\n
“We learn how to understand the patient’s condition and perspective first. After that, we’re taught how to communicate in a way that doesn’t come across as patronizing,” he said.<\/p>\n
Arden also added that the material covered was highly relevant to her future practice as a general practitioner. She explained that managing abortions in pregnancies under 10 weeks is a competency that general practitioners must master.
\n“As a general practitioner, managing abortions under 10 weeks falls under competency level four. This means that general practitioners must manage such cases from start to finish. Through this training, we have gained additional knowledge and understanding of the technologies and approaches that can be used in providing these services,” he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, one of the training facilitators, Dr. Ayu, noted that the participants showed great enthusiasm throughout the event. She attributed their high level of interest to the fact that for most of them, this was the first time they had received such in-depth instruction on AVMs. <\/p>\n
“The AVM training does address some fairly sensitive issues, so the content is always tailored to the participants\u2019 skill levels. For medical students, the most important thing is to provide them with a basic understanding and knowledge relevant to their current needs,” explained Dr. Ayu.<\/p>\n
Through this training, the IPAS Indonesia Foundation hopes that medical students will gain better knowledge and skills in the safe management of miscarriages.
