In many rural coastal villages in Indonesia, the climate crisis cannot be ignored. Local communities face extreme heat and persistent tidal floods. In Sigi and Donggala Regencies, located approximately 2,204 km from the capital city of Jakarta, crop failures and water scarcity have become daily challenges. <\/p>\n

However, most villagers are still unaware of the profound impact of the climate crisis on their reproductive health. A study conducted by Yayasan IPAS Indonesia in collaboration with Hasanuddin University indicates that climate change is a major factor in the increase of child marriage, including challenges in menstrual hygiene and family planning. Nevertheless, communities perceive this trend as a continuation of previous patterns. <\/p>\n

Spreading awareness about these issues is challenging due to low literacy rates, especially in rural areas where access to education is limited. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD<\/a>), Indonesia ranks 70th out of 81 countries in terms of literacy. <\/p>\n

To address this, Yayasan IPAS Indonesia collaborated with 20 young people from Sigi and Donggala Regencies to document the impact of climate change on reproductive health through a five-day photography training. This workshop aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of the impact of climate change on reproductive health. <\/p>\n

We utilized a visual approach to spark their critical and creative thinking. Participants learned how to take powerful photos, write compelling stories, and conduct fieldwork to document the impacts of climate change. <\/p>\n

What participants gained from the training<\/strong><\/p>\n

Faradiva Aulia Azmi’s eyes welled up as she showed the photos she had taken in her village. The person in the photo on the left is her neighbor, Siti, who was forced into marriage at the age of 15 due to economic conditions. <\/p>\n

“My friend’s family sold their farmland due to drought. She felt sad because her family lacked income due to the drought. Then, she decided to get married. She hoped that by getting married, she could alleviate her family’s burden,” said Faradiva.<\/p>\n

Aditya, another participant, shared a similar story. He interviewed his friend who was forced into marriage as a child because her parents could not support her. Their income as agricultural laborers drastically decreased due to extreme weather caused by climate change, leading to crop failures. <\/p>\n

“Water taps should be a source of life for everyone.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Other photos and stories show that the climate crisis has impacted water sources, forcing people to travel further from their homes to find clean water.<\/p>\n

In rural areas, the climate crisis has disproportionately burdened women. They are not only responsible for caring for their children but also for providing water for their families. They often have to travel long distances to the nearest town to obtain water because their villages are submerged by floods.<\/p>\n

Another participant, Gilang, interviewed a woman who had to go to the river to collect water. However, this did not guarantee the water was clean because tidal floods had contaminated the river. Consequently, women in the village suffered from urinary tract infections due to bathing in contaminated water. <\/p>\n

Youth Voices: Reflections from the Ipas Indonesia Team<\/strong><\/p>\n

What was striking about this photography training workshop was seeing how young people connected with their discoveries through the photos. These portraits not only deepened their understanding of how climate change affects reproductive health but also helped make the complex topic of climate change more accessible to the audience. <\/p>\n

Furthermore, participants shared that they felt heard in expressing their views on climate change, which are often overlooked because their voices are rarely heard in their villages. Discussions about climate change typically focus on livelihoods, but their insights added valuable personal perspectives to the conversation through this training and their photos. <\/p>\n

After witnessing their enthusiasm, we are optimistic that these young participants are now more motivated to educate others about the impacts of climate change\u2014especially on reproductive health.<\/p>\n

Yayasan IPAS Indonesia is committed to amplifying the voices of young people and showcasing grassroots aspirations through the photos produced during the workshop on national platforms. We aim to involve them in policy discussions and other advocacy events. <\/p>\n

Di banyak desa pesisir pedesaan di Indonesia, krisis iklim tidak dapat diabaikan. Masyarakat setempat menghadapi panas ekstrem dan banjir rob yang terus-menerus. Di Kabupaten Sigi dan Donggala, yang berjarak sekitar 2.204 km dari ibu kota Jakarta, kegagalan panen dan kekurangan air menjadi tantangan sehari-hari.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Namun, sebagian besar warga desa masih belum menyadari betapa dalam dampak krisis iklim terhadap kesehatan reproduksi mereka. Studi yang dilakukan oleh Yayasan IPAS Indonesia bekerja sama dengan Universitas Hasanuddin menunjukkan bahwa perubahan iklim merupakan faktor utama dalam peningkatan pernikahan dini, termasuk tantangan higiene menstruasi dan perencanaan keluarga. Meskipun demikian, masyarakat memandang tren ini sebagai kelanjutan dari pola sebelumnya.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Menyebarkan kesadaran tentang isu-isu ini menjadi tantangan karena tingkat literasi yang rendah, terutama di daerah pedesaan di mana akses pendidikan terbatas. Menurut Organisasi untuk Kerjasama Ekonomi dan Pembangunan (OECD<\/a>), Indonesia menempati peringkat ke-70 dari 81 negara dalam hal literasi.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Untuk mengatasi hal ini, Yayasan IPAS Indonesia berkolaborasi dengan 20 pemuda dari Kabupaten Sigi dan Donggala untuk mendokumentasikan dampak perubahan iklim terhadap kesehatan reproduksi melalui pelatihan fotografi selama lima hari. Workshop ini bertujuan untuk memperkuat kemampuan orang dalam memahami dampak perubahan iklim terhadap kesehatan reproduksi.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Kami menggunakan pendekatan visual untuk memantik pemikiran kritis dan kreatif mereka. Peserta belajar cara mengambil foto yang kuat, menulis cerita yang menarik, dan melakukan tugas lapangan untuk mendokumentasikan dampak perubahan iklim.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Apa yang peserta tangkap dari pelatihan<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Mata Faradiva Aulia Azmi berkaca-kaca saat ia memperlihatkan foto-foto yang ia ambil di desanya. Orang dalam foto di sebelah kiri adalah tetangganya, Siti, yang dipaksa menikah pada usia 15 tahun karena kondisi ekonomi.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cKeluarga temanku menjual tanah pertanian mereka karena kekeringan. Dia merasa sedih karena keluarganya kekurangan penghasilan akibat kekeringan. Lalu, dia memutuskan untuk menikah. Dia berharap dengan menikah, dia bisa meringankan beban keluarganya,\u201d kata Faradiva.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Siti terpaksa putus sekolah tak lama setelah menikah. Pernikahannya terjadi bukan atas kehendaknya sendiri, melainkan karena keterpaksaan. Orang tua Siti menjodohkannya di usia sangat muda untuk meringankan beban ekonomi keluarga. Mereka telah menjual tanah keluarga akibat dampak krisis iklim dan beralih profesi dari petani menjadi penjual binte biluhata (sup jagung).<\/em><\/p>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Aditya, peserta lain, berbagi cerita serupa. Dia mewawancarai temannya yang dipaksa menikah saat masih anak-anak karena orang tuanya tidak mampu menafkahinya. Pendapatan mereka sebagai buruh tani menurun drastis akibat cuaca ekstrem yang disebabkan oleh perubahan iklim, yang mengakibatkan kegagalan panen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u2018Kran air seharusnya menjadi sumber kehidupan bagi semua orang.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Foto dan cerita lain menunjukkan bahwa krisis iklim telah berdampak pada sumber air, memaksa orang untuk bepergian lebih jauh dari rumah mereka untuk mencari air bersih.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Di daerah pedesaan, krisis iklim telah memberatkan perempuan lebih parah.. Mereka tidak hanya bertanggung jawab untuk merawat anak-anak mereka tetapi juga untuk menyediakan air bagi keluarga. Mereka sering harus bepergian jauh ke kota terdekat untuk mendapatkan air karena desa mereka terendam banjir.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Seorang peserta lain, Gilang, mewawancarai seorang perempuan yang harus pergi ke sungai untuk mengumpulkan air. Namun, hal itu tidak menjamin air tersebut bersih karena banjir pasang telah mencemari sungai. Akibatnya, perempuan di desa tersebut menderita infeksi saluran kemih akibat mandi di air yang tercemar.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Kran air seharusnya menjadi sumber kehidupan bagi semua orang. Namun, kenyataannya sangat berbeda. Banyak warga yang tinggal di desa tersebut menghadapi masalah ketersediaan air bersih. Airnya berkarat. Banyak perempuan di desa tersebut mengalami infeksi bakteri (akibat menggunakan air terkontaminasi).<\/em><\/p>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Suara Orang Muda: Refleksi dari Tim Ipas Indonesia<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Yang menarik dari workshop pelatihan fotografi ini adalah melihat bagaimana orang muda terhubung dengan penemuan mereka melalui foto-foto. Potret-potret ini tidak hanya memperdalam pemahaman mereka tentang bagaimana perubahan iklim memengaruhi kesehatan reproduksi, tetapi juga membantu membuat topik kompleks perubahan iklim lebih mudah dipahami oleh penonton.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Selain itu, peserta berbagi bahwa mereka merasa didengar dalam mengekspresikan pandangan mereka tentang perubahan iklim, yang sering diabaikan karena suara mereka jarang didengar di desa mereka. Pembahasan tentang perubahan iklim biasanya berfokus pada mata pencaharian, tetapi wawasan mereka menambahkan perspektif pribadi yang berharga dalam percakapan melalui pelatihan ini dan foto-foto mereka.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Setelah menyaksikan antusiasme mereka, kami optimistis bahwa peserta muda ini kini lebih termotivasi untuk mendidik orang lain tentang dampak perubahan iklim\u2014terutama pada kesehatan reproduksi.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
