She experienced this violence even from the beginning of her marriage. She often confided in her parents and in-laws, unsure of what to do. However, in the end, she remained trapped in the cycle of violence. “For the sake of my children,” Mrs. Sirpia recalled.

Mrs. Sirpia married a man who was also her neighbor in a village in Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi, in 1994. The violence began because Mrs. Sirpia’s husband frequently gambled and had affairs. When Mrs. Sirpia raised these issues, her husband would beat her.

“When I was eight months pregnant, my husband started having an affair. How could my marriage be like this? I returned to my parents’ home, and my husband came to pick me up. It continued; my husband remained the same, caught between gambling and infidelity,” she stated.

Although her husband also provided for their small family, he habitually gambled and associated with other women. Mrs. Sirpia could no longer tolerate the situation. Repeatedly, she asked her husband for a divorce. “I tried to talk to him, but he would not listen; instead, I was beaten,” she added.

Mrs. Sirpia attempted to cope with the feelings caused by the violence by migrating for work. To improve the family’s economic situation, she added. She repeatedly moved, working as an oil palm laborer in Kalimantan. Despite this, she continued to involve her husband, hoping he would change. However, the gambling habit persisted even while working away from home.

Unable to endure the situation, Mrs. Sirpia decided to become a migrant worker in Jordan in 2006. It was then that she decided to migrate alone. Meanwhile, her husband remained in the village. Not long after, Mrs. Sirpia’s husband also found work outside the city in Central Sulawesi.

“Rather than being stressed in the village, I told my parents that instead of doing something regrettable, it would be better for me to seek a livelihood in another country. After two years there, Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), I managed to build a house. My intention from Indonesia was to change my economic situation,” she asserted.

After working in Jordan, she began to notice a change in her husband’s behavior. She stated that her husband no longer beat her. This is what made her stay until now. “Alhamdulillah, it’s rare now; [perhaps my husband knows] this woman is brave enough to go anywhere,” she added.

Mrs. Sirpia acknowledged that information regarding violence is now more accessible. This differs from what she experienced in the 1990s. She could only confide in her parents. Furthermore, she did not dare to tell others for fear it would bring shame upon her family.

“Back then, in my time, I had not heard that we could report such incidents. If I had known such information back then, I would have reported it to the police,” she concluded.

Mrs. Sirpia obtained information regarding reporting cases of violence when she participated in a thematic discussion on Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) and Gender-Based and Sexual Violence. The discussion was conducted by the Central Sulawesi Women’s Equality Advocacy Group (KPKP-ST), supported by the IPAS Indonesia Foundation. This activity was carried out in 20 villages in Sigi and Donggala Regencies, involving groups of women, men, and adolescents.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Warning: This story contains the experiences of a domestic violence survivor, which may cause discomfort and trigger trauma related to violence during reading.
