Worse still, due to climate change, both regencies frequently experience floods. This situation made it difficult for residents to access reproductive health services.

A collaborative study conducted by the IPAS Indonesia Foundation in partnership with Hasanuddin University found that difficult access to healthcare services post-earthquake and due to climate change led to an increase in Unintended Pregnancies (UP) and challenges in accessing contraception.

Faina, a village midwife from Sigi Regency, stated that two months after the earthquake, access to contraception completely ceased. Local residents could not access these services due to the paralysis of healthcare facilities. Furthermore, several healthcare workers were forced to evacuate for their safety. Consequently, no one was available to provide these services.

“After that earthquake, one or two months passed, and contraception was not available. Post-earthquake, the number of pregnant women increased because many mothers could not access healthcare services,” Midwife Faina recalled.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://ipasindonesiad.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_2981-edited-1536×863-1.jpg” alt=”This motivated Midwife Faina and a number of volunteers” title_text=”IMG_2981-edited-1536×863″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

This motivated Midwife Faina and several volunteer health workers to provide proactive outreach services by visiting the community. “During the earthquake, we provided injectable contraception through mobile services. This continued for two months,” she added.

Even after the earthquake, several health workers continued to provide proactive outreach services. They visited temporary shelters (huntara) to educate and provide reproductive health services.

Midwife Misini from Donggala Regency frequently visited couples of reproductive age to provide education related to contraception in temporary shelters. Several programs were also initiated by the Community Health Centers (Puskesmas) to reduce Unintended Pregnancies. One of these is the Pregnant Women’s Class.

“We gather pregnant women. Ideally, their husbands should also attend this Pregnant Women’s Class. If not, at least the mothers themselves should come. So, we conduct examinations for pregnant women there,” explained Midwife Misini.

During these examinations, Midwife Misini was also accompanied by laboratory personnel to directly check the condition of pregnant women. One such check is for HBsAg to confirm the presence or absence of the hepatitis B virus. Additionally, pregnant women receive education regarding nutrition for themselves and their babies.

To ensure women receive their reproductive health rights, the IPAS Indonesia Foundation, through KPKP-ST, conducted capacity building for nurses and village midwives in 20 villages in Sigi and Donggala. This training focused on responding to women’s reproductive health issues and cases of gender-based and sexual violence. This initiative was undertaken due to an increase in reproductive health disorders and violence in these two regencies as a result of the earthquake and climate change. The activity was carried out from August to December 2022.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

The 2018 earthquake, measuring 7.4 on the Richter Scale, in Sigi and Donggala Regencies, Central Sulawesi, destroyed almost all local health facilities.
