The event, held from October 11-13, 2022, at Artotel Suites Bianti Yogyakarta, was organized in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Public Health (FKKM), Gadjah Mada University (UGM).

The availability and capacity of qualified healthcare personnel, including obstetricians and gynecologists, general practitioners, and midwives, are crucial aspects for expanding public access to APK services. Therefore, the IPAS Indonesia Foundation, in collaboration with FKKM UGM, strengthens and enhances the capacity of master trainers for comprehensive and woman-centered APK training.

This training activity aims to improve the skills (capacity) of master trainers in facilitating training of trainers (ToT) for APK. This training is also expected to strengthen the skills (capacity) of master trainers in developing curricula/agendas and comprehensive APK clinical training curricula, both face-to-face and online, or a blended (offline and online) combination.

The main facilitators for this activity are Prof. Alison Edelman from Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), United States, and Nadia Piedrahita. These two main facilitators will be assisted by master trainers from FKKM UGM.

The IPAS Indonesia Foundation is committed to supporting the provision of APK services. As is known, Indonesia still faces reproductive health issues, marked by a high maternal mortality rate of 305 per 100,000 live births (SUPAS, 2015).

Based on the analysis of maternal mortality determinants conducted in 2012 by the Ministry of Health’s Health Research and Development Agency, it was found that 4% of maternal deaths occurred in pregnancies less than 20 weeks, caused by abortion/miscarriage. Therefore, it is important for all healthcare personnel, especially doctors and midwives, to understand and be able to provide APK services according to standards, based on their competence and authority.

Although miscarriage is a very common condition among pregnant women, APK services in Indonesia are still not optimally provided. APK services often still focus only on the medical management of miscarriage. Other aspects such as psychosocial support through counseling, post-miscarriage contraception services, and referrals to various other needed services are still not commonly found. The 2010 Riskesdas report stated that safer methods for evacuating retained products of conception, such as medication (14.3%) or vacuum aspiration (2.4%), were less frequently used compared to curettage (57.4%).

Research conducted by the Guttmacher Institute in Java in 2017 found that only 2% of Puskesmas (community health centers) trained and capable of PONED provided post-miscarriage care services. However, these services should have been included in the PONED training guidelines and curriculum for Puskesmas.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://ipasindonesiad.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/menyiapkan-pelatih-master-2.jpg” alt=”preparing-master-trainer” title_text=”Training Master Trainer 2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Meanwhile, miscarriage management using vacuum aspiration, which is safer than curettage, is only available in 65% of health facilities, and contraceptive counseling is only provided in 68% of health facilities. Key barriers to services include the insufficient number of trained healthcare workers, a lack of tools and equipment, and limited availability of necessary medications.

Since the issuance of Ministry of Health Regulation No. 21 of 2021 concerning the Provision of Health Services During Pre-Pregnancy, Pregnancy, Childbirth and Postpartum Periods, Contraception Services, and Sexual Health Services, and the launch of the National APK Guidelines document as a derivative of this policy in the same year, the IPAS Indonesia Foundation has consistently supported its implementation. One way is by strengthening and enhancing the capacity of master trainers for APK training.
